Do I think the new casino in Plainville will be hurt if they don’t allow smoking in certain areas?

The answer is yes. I won't go there if I have to get up from the machine I am playing to smoke. My wife and I go to Mohegan Sun when we want to have a fun day of gambling.

When I am sitting at a machine in a smoking area, if a lady sits at the machine next to me, I ask, "If I smoke, will it bother you?" If they say, yes, I put my cigar down. Yes, I only play machines in the smoking areas. Yet non-smokers always seem to end up in smoking areas. They know it is a smoking area and they still want to come in, and they get mad if you are smoking. They have no business being in the smoking area, yet they come. If I was in a non-smoking area I would be asked to leave the area.

My wife and I take enough money to gamble to make the day a fun day out of it. We are not heavy gamblers. Non-smokers take advantage of the non-smoking laws. If they see someone making money they come into that area and sit down and complain about you smoking.

I will give you an example of something stupid that happened to me in Hawaii, where you can't smoke anywhere in buildings. That I agree with. If my wife went in a store to shop, I waited outside. A police officer came up to me and said I have to be 20 feet away from the building to smoke. I told him I didn't know that. I apologized and paced off the 20 feet. That landed me in the street. He ran up to me and told me I couldn't stay there in the street because of the traffic. He was mad and asked me if I was a wise guy.

I told him I was a retired police officer and I was going by the law he told me. He looked at me and told me I could smoke on the sidewalk within the 20 feet line. When I reach the sidewalk I told him I would buy him a coffee. We went for coffee and he told me I have every right to stand in the street by the law. He also said I would be hit by a car. I laughed and told him I wouldn't have stayed there long.

Smoking laws are good. But I will be damned if I will let anyone tell me I can’t smoke in a smoking area. Yes, I will be a gentlemen if a lady is bothered by my smoking in a smoking area. If there is no smoking in a building I won't go in with a lit cigar. As far as free drinks go in a casino, stopping that is just a way to cover up another tax increase. Leave it to Taxachusetts to make more money at the expense of the people.

A good casino has smoking areas and non-smoking areas. I can’t say what I really want to where smoking is concerned. I am 75 years old. I don’t drink. My doctor asked me over 10 years ago if I could stop drinking. I was a heavy drinker back then. I never had another drink. I smoke two cigars a day and I will be damned if I will give up my right to smoke now.

Two doctors told me to smoke when I told them I don’t inhale the smoke. Smoking calms my PTSD down. I will never smoke in a smoking area if I know my smoking bothers others. That is my choice, not the law's.
